In October 2008, we went to Avignon in Provence. There was a smaller group this time, 24, but no less enjoyable. We stayed at Hotel Bristol which was very convenient for the town, the bus station and the railway stations. We sang at a mass in Saint Agricole church and in the Grande_Chapelle in the Palais des Papes, and also in various ad hoc places including on the Pont d'Avignon, in les Alyscamps in Arles and in Nimes_Cathedral.

In August 2007, we went to Krakow in Poland. This was another great trip. We stayed at the Radisson SAS Hotel which was excellent. Krakow is highly recommended for the sight-seeing, friendly Polish people and value for money. The city very much reveres Pope John Paul II (where he was archbishop) and exhibitions of photographs, paintings and sculptures of him are everywhere in evidence. We visited Wieliczka Salt Mine, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Zakopane as well as travelling around Krakow itself. And, of course, we sang at various churches (the chapel in the salt mine, St Peter's & St Paul's and the Capuchin Church), and we busked in the market square (but not for money to preserve our amateur status!). There are plenty of concerts every night, especially at St Peter's & St Paul's Church and live music at many pubs and clubs including Ob Nova.

In August 2004, we went to Glasgow, recently European Capital of Culture. We sang Choral Evensong at Blackburn Cathedral on the way up, in the Music Room in the House for an Art Lover in Glasgow, in St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh and our main concert was at Largs. We also went to the tattoo in Edinburgh.
In August 2003, we went to France again and stayed at Troyes. Here is a picture of the fabulous stained glass window at the east end of the cathedral. We visited Vaux le Vicomte, Rheims Cathedral and Mercier Champagne at Eperney.
We sang at Rampillon.
We visited Fontainebleau and Sens Cathedral. The final picture is an aerial view of Troyes.
In August 2002, we went to the Czech Republic and stayed in Prague. We sang at the basilica in Prague Castle. St Vitus's Cathedral is nearby.
Here is the Charles Bridge and the Jan Hus monument. We busked outside the Old Town Hall (see the astronomical clock), as did others.
We visited Lidice, which was very moving. Here is the children's monument in memory of the town razed to the ground during World War II.
We visited Karlstejn Castle and Tabor.
For the second half of the week, we moved on to stay in Ceske Budejovice. That was very memorable because of the floods! Here is the original hotel we were going to stay at, but as you can see the waters had reached that hotel and came up even higher the day after.
The floods came up to the hotel we did stay at and the square and we had to stay in the hotel. Our concert in the church had to be cancelled.
In August 2001, we went to Holland and stayed in Bergen. We sang a concert in the Abbey Van Berne, Heeswijk and Choral Evensong in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. In order: Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Marken, Royal Palace in Amsterdam, Cheese Market in Alkmaar, canal in Alkmaar, Abbey Van Berne, Hotel Marijke in Bergen.
In August 2000, we went to Ireland, staying in Waterford, Killarney, Limerick and Dublin. We sang at Killarney Methodist Church and St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. In August 1999, we went to Cologne and Bad Salzig and sang at Wesseling and Maria Laach monastery. Here is Cologne Cathedral and Limburg Cathedral and the monastery.
Here is the hotel we stayed at in Bad Salzig, a float in the flower festival procession at Bad Ems, the Loreley rock (guess what we sang to the captive audience on the boat!) and Burg Eltz.
The choir went to France in August 1998 and sung in Chartres Cathedral and in Courville-sur-Eure (Alveston's twin town).
We did some sight-seeing in Paris, went to a superb display at Versaille and visited two chateaux.
This is where it all started! Continuo went to Bruges for a holiday. This page was last updated on 24/12/08 at 18:09. |
